Admit U wrote out this amazing COLLEGE PREP TO-DO LIST:

What should  they be doing now?

Seniors

 Interviews

Your applications are out and you want to show the schools know how much you really, really, really want to be accepted…what should you do? Request an interview! But first check the school’s website or call to see if interviews are part of the process – some schools do not use them at all. Colleges will often offer an on-site interview to students who are visiting or pair students with local alumni who conduct interviews. These interviews are the perfect way for students to stand out and make a great impression. They can also help students learn more about the schools. Of course, remember to be prompt, bring an activity sheet or resume, be prepared to talk about why you are a good match for the school, and thank your interviewer within 24 hours after the interview!

✔ School performance

You can’t hear this enough: senior year grades matter. You must keep studying and doing the best you can in school. Colleges look at first semester grades (some even request first marking period grades!) and do not like to see a drop. This may suggest immaturity or that the student will not do well balancing rigorous college courses plus campus life. Some admissions letters also state that, “Acceptance is contingent on your continued successful performance”— in other words, they can rescind their offer of admission or put you on probation first semester. So, stay focused and do your best!

✔ Stay consistent

Whether it is with your activities or grades, it’s important not to catch a case of “senioritis!”

✔ Monitor your applications

Now is the time to keep track of completed applications. How many more essays do you need to write for each school? Are your letters of recommendations submitted?  Have you confirmed with the university that your application was received? Did you send test scores?

 Demonstrate interest

They love me, they love me not, they love me! Show your love for colleges of interest through emails to admissions officers (with thoughtful questions), campus visits, or alumni interviews. Colleges want to accept students who will enroll so demonstrating a clear interest can help you stand out.

Juniors

✔ College visits

Visiting a school is the best way to tell if a school may be a good fit for you and junior year is a great time to visit! You should arrange for a visit on the admissions website or call the admissions office. They often have daily campus tours, open houses, or special events. As you plan your trip, keep these tips in mind: try to visit during the week so you can sit in on a class and see the campus “in action,” avoid college breaks when campus is quiet, talk to current students and ask questions, and pick up a copy of the school newspaper to see what is going on. Some schools will even pair high school students with college freshmen for an overnight stay to truly experience campus life.  If you can’t visit, that’s ok!  There are other ways to demonstrate interest through college fairs, online chats, and colleges even host local forums.

 Testing Timeline

College admissions tests (SAT and ACT) are offered multiple times throughout the year and it is important to plan ahead. Many students take the PSAT in October of junior year, do intensive studying throughout the winter and take the SAT or ACT in January, March or April. In May or June, SAT Subject Tests are available for students with strength and passion for a particular subject area, or students can try the SAT or ACT again. Some students repeat the college admissions tests in the fall of senior year as well. While you can always make changes to your personal testing timeline, you will be best prepared for the tests if you plan ahead.

 Teacher Letters of Recommendation

Colleges require letters of recommendation from teachers who can share insights about your strengths and skill sets in the classroom. Junior year is ideal for giving colleges the most current assessment of you before heading into application season. Start making connections with some of your teachers, work hard, and allow them to get to know you as a student and person. You will be asking one or two teachers to write for you at the end of junior year.

Sophomores and Freshmen

✔ Get involved in activities

College admissions officers are looking for students who are highly dedicated to a few activities rather than just slightly involved in many. QUALITY versus QUANTITY! Now is the time to select the few areas that deeply interest you and get involved through leadership roles. If you do not see an organization that matches your interest, start a new one. Colleges love to see students take initiative!

✔ Study

Do your very best in all of your classes. A good start in high school is very important, as these grades contribute to your final GPA and rank. Seniors often say that they wish they took their classes more seriously as freshmen because 9th grade Spanish counts as much as 11th grade Spanish toward the GPA. It’s mathematically tough to raise your GPA once it’s set freshman year, so start strong and finish strong!
