People, It is not Superstorm Sandy

Holy Hell people – GET A GRIP!

Last night I had a late appointment and decided to stop at Trader Joes in Millburn on my way home to pick up a box of granola bars for Zach.  I should have known when I pulled into the parking lot I was walking into a shit storm. The lot was packed, people were pulling in and backing out at rapid speed. I grabbed a basket and walked in. I do not think I walked more than 4 feet without noticing the shelves were next to empty. It then occurred to me OH, RIGHT  SNOW TOMORROW! Apparently I was late to the game, but was I? I quickly thought about what I had in the house. Truthfully, I was so busy catching up yesterday with everything I was supposed to do Monday, I wasn’t on my A game to figure out the Wednesday storm. But what did I really need to “figure out”?  One day of food?!

I began to talk to the people in the market who clearly thought I was nuts.  I asked them what they were shopping for…Why in the world was EVERY SINGLE ITEM gone? Not kidding! Not just the staples but all the frozen items, the produce, the cereal, the nuts, the entire STORE! WTF!

I’m sorry but are we expecting the apocalypse? I would love to know what you people need all this food for. Did you all decide to feed the hungry at once? Because if that is the case I am on board but if not ,which I am 99.9% sure you are not, WHAT ARE YOU EATING TODAY? Can I come over?

In all seriousness what puzzles me the most is why people feel the need to buy out the store. I heard and watched the same news you did and I am pretty sure things will all be back to normal on Thursday. Even if we have an ice storm and we lose power, the non-generator people will have to throw out all the frozen food they bought along with the most of the refrigerated food because as far as I know your oven won’t work (unless you are old school). For the generator people I am assuming you are preparing to invite the hood.

It is ONE DAY PEOPLE ONE DAY! If I am putting my foot in my mouth and this storm turns out to be the ice killer they say it will be, so be it. I think it is absolutely absurd what has taken place not just at Traders Joes but at Target, Kings, and Shoprite. At the end of this week I hope you are donating all this food to people in need.

On another note, I am fortunate enough to work from home not that it really means I am getting work done. However, what are the working moms doing??? If you do not have “live-in”, how are you managing this winter? Parents, neighbors, new-found friends? Has anyone been laid off? I can’t seem to wrap my head around what working parents are doing during this horrific winter with all the school closings. I know the weather situation is out of our hands but working sort of isn’t. I hope your bosses are being understanding and if not, how are you dealing? I seriously feel for you.

Anyway – Stay Warm and Eat Your Food! I AM OVER THIS WINTER!

It is beyond absurd.  And it’s not as if we all couldn’t live for a week just on what’s hoarded in the pantry! Dry cereal and margaritas anyone? (But seriously…)

As for working…it’s not a problem with my kids, but my studio is suffering…our clients are stuck in with theirs! And the funniest is there is indeed a connection with your trader joe’s issue…they text me with every ounce gained as a result of their snow-boundedness!  hmmmm….perhaps if they hadn’t bought all that trader joes pizza?? The irony…

  4. I went to Stop and Shop yesterday and there wasn’t a free cart in the place! I agree with you completely, and hope that we’ll be back to business on Thursday. We have about a foot of new snow in inland CT and now there is a lovely coat of freezing rain coming down and the dog refuses to go out. Boy, I could really use some organic, whole wheat pasta to shovel us out. 😉

I’m from MN, where we live in the Polar Vortex. My kids had 4 days off of school (2 at a time, several weeks apart) because of temps at -35-40 with windchill. We didn’t leave the house on those days; stayed inside for 72 hours. I thought I stocked up, but none of our grocery stores looked as barren as yours! That’s really unbelievable.
