I scream, You scream, We all scream for …..

It amazes me when I hear some of my friends tell me they have dinner as a “family” during the week. Meaning all the kids and the parents sit down at one dinner table at the same time and have the same meal. Baffling!  We have a Sunday tradition in our home: we all eat together! But that is about the extent of our meals together. My husband works late, my kids eat early plus my kids have crazy sports schedules. Half the time I am feeding them in the car between soccer and baseball. It is just plain insanity. Growing up we ate as a family. My father worked in Philly but he always somehow made it home around 6 and we managed to eat together EVERY NIGHT! The one thing I remember about our meals in the summer was the sound of the Ice Cream Truck around the end of dinner.

 

 

It was music to my ears. I would literally run from the dinner table, down the block (somehow always managing to get a cramp from just eating) and ordering a chocolate eclair. So today, on my way home from baseball with the kids (shocker), the Ice Cream Truck was on our street. I could not believe it!!! My kids obviously freaked out, jumped out of the car and ran to the truck. Seems so silly, right? But I have to tell you I was so excited for them.  Now is this a one night deal? Is the Ice Cream Truck coming back tomorrow night? Do you have a daily truck on your block? I see them at the games but not on residential streets. There is so something so awesome about an Ice Cream Truck. First the fact that I don’t have to take the kids to the one of 300 yogurt stores in town. I am just DONE by the end of the day. Second it’s a pastime every kid should grow up with and third it brings the neighborhood together. Kids should be riding bikes after dinner, playing with their neighbors and spending some quality time just being a “kid”.  Between all the homework and over scheduling of sports, I think kids are missing out on just being a kid. I hope the Ice Cream Truck comes back tomorrow.
