The Cicada Comeback

I hate bugs. I am not really sure how I even survived camp.  I cannot believe in 2-6 weeks from now we will literally be visited by billions of cicadas.  The craziest thing about these creatures is that they hide underground for 17 years and then decide to make a re-occurrence.  They emerge from the ground to breed and die soon afterwards. They come out in HORDES (ew, don’t you hate that word) and will make a showing from New England to North Carolina.  You will know they are coming because you can hear them from a mile away. They say they sound almost like the “rumble of a New York City subway train”. The grossest thing I read was that as many as one billion cicadas could emerge per square mile.

 

The last time they emerged was 1996. I have to be honest I don’t recall it at all. I was in college living La Vida Loca. Believe me I would remember hearing one billion cicadas in Syracuse! Anyhow beware, they are coming to your neighborhood soon. They come out of the earth once the ground temp reaches about 64 degrees. They stay around four to six weeks to mate and then check out.  They don’t harm us they just sound like a freight train! I am sure we will all know when they are here…. Don’t say I didn’t warn you 🙂
