Hats off to Yorn

If you asked me one of the single most important things my parents taught me I would say music.  MUSIC!!!! I grew up in a house with Al Green, Boz Scaggs and Steely Dan. My father had a record collection that took up the entire den. He had a Denon turntable that we were not allowed to touch!(yes this one)

I guess at the time it was world class. My brother now has it and its probably collecting dust in his NYC apartment.  Anyhow – camp helped open my world to music as well. This is where I learned about Meatloaf, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet and Zepplin. Floyd was later. So was Dylan.

Obviously as you get older your music taste changes and so does your friends. Syracuse circa ‘93 – Pete Yorn. Who was Pete Yorn? He was the guy at Harry’s who was usually by himself or maybe with a friend or two. He went early and left before the madness (sometimes not).  He was a year older than me and wouldn’t know me from a hole in the wall. But I knew Yorn. I knew a lot of his friends and I knew he grew up in Jersey (big plus here).  I also knew he was a songwriter.  So when I transferred after Sophomore year and he graduated and moved to LA, I heard he was producing a record. I probably was one of the first people to buy it. It was awesome (actually still is) “Music for the Morning After”.  The best part of seeing him play when he comes to town is it brings all the SU gang back together. Thanks for that Pete.

So where is this all coming from – I heard him on the Spectrum today (channel 28 Sirius) and I was thought to myself – you made it Yorn. You fucking made it.  Every guy I know at some point dreamt they could be a rock star. Well you made it Yorn. Keep on playing…

Btw – this is one of my fave’s!

My dad also had an awesome collection of records of every genre. That’s where I too learned the obsession of music. I am never not listening to something.

For the record, that record player is put to use and gets a wipe down routinely. 🙂

As you know, he was once a very close friend, listening to his music, reminds me of hanging out at his apt in SU, introducing him to my friend Adam to be his big bro in DU, going, to the lions den right after college to hear him play, taking David to see and meet Pet at Roseland Ballroom, and going on a Sunday night 3 years ago to hear him play with all my SU girls (I had so much fun I can’t remember where)….Whenever I want to smile I play one of Pete’s songs and I am happy all day! Those are my favorite memories, They are a part of my past, a part I will always hold close to me! I could not agree more “keep on playing Yorn” for his songs will always hold a BIG place in my heart!
