Earth Day Fave’s!

Happy Earth Day! To kick this Earth day off with a bang I thought I would share some of my most favorite Earth Friendly products I have found this year and use often!!

My latest find that I have become obsessed with is the new Treat Nail Polish Collection straight out of Berlin.

NONTOXIC COLORS

Treat Collection polishes are “5-free” – this means they deliberately abstain from commonly used risky ingredients. No more doubts or worries about having your nails shine day after day, even during pregnancy or with children around – their polishes are nontoxic and so much healthier than regular products.

They say NO to:

FormaldehydE
An important building block for the chemical industry which in cosmetics is frequently used as dissolvent – even though it provokes allergies as well as irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tracks and is considered to be cancer-causing. Treat Collection does without this risk factor, no doubt about it!

FormaldehydE RESIN
One of the oldest plastics with hard and break-proof properties, it is frequently used in the production of chipboards and circuit boards. However, it is deemed to cause allergic contact reactions and skin problems. They want you to be carefree when brushing a strand of hair out of your face or touching up on your make-up – this is why they opt for nonhazardous resins.

ToluoENE
This liquid is also contained in gasoline and is used as a solvent – but EU Regulation classifies it as harmful to health. Its strong smell would drive you to your knees and can be addictive. To them, it is a matter of course to use vegan alternatives in our Treat Collection polishes.

DBP (Dibutyl phthalatE)
A commonly used plasticizer used to keeps plastics elastic – but they are entirely out of place in baby articles, toys and cosmetics. Given that it is classified as toxic and dangerous to the environment it is even prohibited for such purposes in the EU. Unlike other manufacturers they have always made sure that their Treat Collection nail polishes keep supple and smooth using non-poisonous components!

CAMPHOR
Another component used as plasticizer – in addition it is used in pest control and blasting gelatine. Not very sexy, all the less since it is psychoactive and toxic, thereby causing nausea, respiratory distress and panic attacks. Nothing you want to use on your fingers or toes, which is why Treat Collection polishes make sure you nails shine healthily.

The colors are AMAZING!!! I actually found this line on my visit to LA last week!

I have been using Tide since I can remember. It is what my mom used to wash my clothes and I never thought about laundry detergent until I went on this crazy hunt this year for awesome green products. I discovered The Laundress. WOW!

It may seem like their products are expensive at first glance but a little goes a LONG way and you can save money on dry cleaning. Can you believe they actually formulated a product to clean your cashmere sweaters without having to send them to the dry cleaners? They also came out with a whole cleaning line as well.

My other favorite home cleaning line is actually from Target, Mrs. Meyer Clean Day. Inexpensive, clean, environmentally safe products for the home! I was skeptical at first about “natural” cleaning products but they do work plus they make the house smell delicious!

As most of you know who have been following my blog for some time, the reason I began my quest for clean, safe products was when I discovered Beautycounter. The new anti-aging line has become my daily morning and night regimen.

Plus, did you know that many facial scrubs exfoliate the skin with tiny plastic beads, which can end up in waterways, affecting wildlife?
Beautycounter’s Gentle Exfoliator uses natural, biodegradable jojoba beads so that our rivers and oceans stay clean. Small changes, like using a safer exfoliator can add up to big differences for our environment.

Best of all is the fact that I am keeping my children safe with their Kids Collection. My 9 year old, who is VERY opinionated, loves it (and so do I!)

kids_groupshot_rzSo remember the cleanse I did last month, well the Doctor of the cleanse (Gwyneth’s Doctor), Alejandro Junger, just published his first cookbook which has to be pre-ordered but I was so excited he wrote it, I ordered it now. You can pre-order it now on Amazon : Clean Eats: Over 200 Delicious Recipes to Reset Your Body’s Natural Balance and Discover What It Means to Be Truly Healthy. By the way, I am starting a new detox tomorrow. I needed a reboot after Passover and Spring Break…can’t wait to share the deets! No, it is not a juice cleanse!

Another addition to my new “green’ home is the use of glass containers. Upon reading the dangers of plastic tupperware (although Tupperware has been BPA free since March 2010), I changed over to Pyrex Glass Not only does my food last so much longer, I know I am helping (even if it is just a teeny weeny bit) to save the environment. Why?

Using glass rather than plastic significantly reduces landfill. It also saves energy on plastic’s inefficient recycling process. And unlike that metastasizing heap of mismatched plastic containers in your kitchen cupboard, once you invest in glass storage containers, your supply pretty much stays steady. With care, you’ll use your original glass containers almost indefinitely.

If you break a glass container, you can recycle it without guilt:

  • Up to 80% of all recycled glass can be reclaimed.
  • Recycled glass uses 40% less energy than manufacturing new glass.
  • Recycling doesn’t compromise glass’ quality or structure and no toxins are produced in it’s recycling
  • A move to glass storage marks a raised consciousness—arguably glass’ most valuable environmental benefit. Your investment in glass helps you move from a throw-away mind-set to a more sustainable sensibility.

Two of my favorite “Green” travel products:

I hate plane food. HATE. Besides the fact that they don’t serve it anymore, there is never anything good to eat and I am always starving when I get off the plane. I found this 3 Tier Stainless Set which is the perfect answer to traveling with food! ($24.95) (also comes in a 2 tier version)

Finally – to all of you who have helped the local Farms by ordering from the Farm & Fork Society, big kudos! They extended the deadline until April 30th so you still have a little time. No idea what I am talking about – click here : Farm & Fork.

Happy Earth Day – I hope one of these products will help you make a difference!
